It's war I tell you!
As you may or may not know, a new computer is extremely vulnerable when you first get online with it. There are ways to ensure the safety though. You can get the Windows Update CD from Microsoft and install that before coming online. You can also get most Antivirus Definitions dnloaded loaded and saved to disk and then install those before you go online. Of course, you must be using that product in the first place. And you can get AntiSpyware on a disk and do the same. But how many people who, in his enthusiasm out of the box and hook and see what they will do.
SANS Internet Storm Center said that these people have their computer infected with adware or worse in less than 20 minutes! New computers online protrudes like a sore thumb. First comes the shock, anger, then the question. How do I fix? If they are lucky, you can fix pretty cheap. It could include a lot of time listening to elevator music while in the queue. Either way not fun.
Education is what is needed here folks.
In this paper plan play simple steps you can take to keep your computer secure and happy. First lets talk about your online connection itself. Dialup, satellite, DSL, which is, make sure they are safe. Call em and ask em. What kind of security are used to maintain secure websurfing? Often have information on your site. Read their Privacy Policy.
Okay, now part of the browser. A difficult issue with many. I use Firefox and IE mostly only when I have to. Unless you've been living in a hole you know IE has its vulnerabilities. Nothing against the people of IE. This is aimed both because that is what you use most. Hackers, spam, phishing, and the rest know this and swarm like sharks. Firefox has its problems too. They get noticed and they have to work harder, too keep your browser secure too. Whatever you use, keep it updated. Whatever you use, get some control software, such as BigFix or Winpatrol. Learn how work and be a happy WebSurfer.
While we're talking about software products, let's think about what they do online. There are many products out there that tries and cover all aspects of protecting your computer. It is difficult to write software in spite of doing all that. I found a mix of products to do well for me. Now I use Win patrol, Sygate Firewall and Avast Antivirus Ad-Aware SE to cover my bases. But what works for me may not work for you. So how to find the right mix or if you're lucky the only product that will do the job? Education. Pure and simple. You must be educated on what's happening out there, on the Web and be prepared for it. We're not talking big bucks, either in most cases. There are some great products out there that are free! The Web is diverse, with forums, blogs, instant messaging, videoconferencing, and Web Sites of the course. Especially the new ones. The XXX. Each has its own uniqueness as far as the vulnerabilities. Whatever your preference, make sure you're safe.
It is likely however, you'll pick up some spyware. It is difficult for hardware and software providers to keep up to the minute patches available. Although I have seen the patches available in less than 3 hours from some suppliers. Hopefully what you will harmless, just annoying. It only places a cookie on your computer and tracks when going from site to site. Marketing Information is what you want. However, some programs Spies can be unpleasant. Log keystrokes that, and it means that your login and credit card numbers.
And now, email. How mankind ever did without email we'll never know. It is one of the greatest comforts and never what a time saver. No need of a stamp and no script for the mailbox in the rain. But as always, with the good comes the bad. People want to use your bank account to deposit money, they want open this attachment, and please just click this address! Spammers, prostitutes, phishers Oh My! My advice, scan anything that is not someone who you know with Anti-Virus. Never click on a URL from your bank. Go there yourself from your browser. Check if your mail program has an option to alert you if something in the email that may be a virus, and Outlook Express. It may be inconvenient sometimes, but worth it. Some of the best Web-based services like Yahoo have a folder of spam that helps tremendously. I did not even open the folder, simply delete the contents of each day.
Remember, you have to educate themselves, if going to be on the Internet. I hope to see in my life to online threats.
