Answer:
Use the steps in this document to troubleshoot problems that may occur when attempting burn discs with a CD recording or DVD. From Step 1, do not skip to other sections until Step 1 complete.
Step 1: Identify the drive in Device Manager
Use the following steps to determine if the drive is properly recognized by Windows and for important information about the disk:
1.In Windows XP, click Start, right-click My Computer.
In Windows 98 and Me, right-click My Computer.
2.In Windows 98 and Me, select Properties and click the Device Manager tab.
In Windows XP, select Properties, click the Hardware tab, then click the Device Manager button.
3.Click the plus sign plus (+) next to CD DVD / CD-ROM (or similar).
Figure 1: Drive device name in Device Manager
4.In the CD or DVD does not appear in Device Manager, close Device Manager and use the support document CD or DVD is not detected.
If the name of a CD or DVD is on the list but it appears as â € OECD-ROMA €, go to step 4 to set the the drive as a recordable disc.
If the name of a CD or DVD in the list, type the name of the drive and continue with step 2.
NOTE: If the drive name contains an error (a yellow triangle or a question mark), double-click the name of the drive to read the error message. Then Use this information to find more troubleshooting information in case the rest of these steps do not help.
Media Communication Step 2: Make sure the system is compatible with CD / DVD
Read and understand each of the following items before attempting to solve more problems:
* You can not burn DVDs with disc burning process of Windows XP. At the time of this writing Windows XP only supports CD burning, DVD does not burn. To burn DVDs in Windows XP you must use a separate software â € "such as RecordNow or Creator Basic. Please continue using this document if you are having problems burning DVDs with special software.

* Make sure your disk is actually capable of burning the media type to use. For example, a combination DVD / CDRW can not burn DVDs. Eject the drive door and look under the front of the unit to see all the different formats that the unit is capable to use.
* If the drive is having problems burning discs that you know are compatible with the unit, whether the disc is bad or driveâ ™ € s firmware might be able to be updated. Update driveâ ™ € s firmware can make the drive compatible with most brands. Updated of driveâ ™ € s firmware not allowing the unit to record a new disc type. For example, you can not upgrade the firmware on a CD or DVD so you can record DVD + R or dual layer discs.
If you want to update your firmware driveâ ™ € s or still not sure if the drive supports the disc to record, see the support document identifying the pre-installed CD or DVD.
* If the unit is not burning or recognizing disks, CD-quality use R discs for testing as CD-R is highly compatible.
* Dual-Layer discs can only record on DL media. To check, open the door unit and seek a OEDL € â € printed on the front of the unit.
* Blu-ray discs can only be burned by a BD compatible and requires special software to burn. To check, open the drive door and look for a â € € œBDâ printed on the front of the unit.
After checking each of these elements, proceed to Step 3.
Step 3: Reduce the recording speed
If the unit is not recognizing the disc at all, go to Step 4. Reduce writerâ € ™ s CD recording speed in half to increase the likelihood of success of burn. The decrease in recording speed is a quick and easy way to increase the recording sessions of the hit record, at the expense of having more time to create a disc. The following steps are for Windows XP. For Windows 98 and Me, reduce the write speed from the software you are using to burn discs (RecordNow, Easy CD Creator)
1.Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2.Right click the drive icon and select Properties.
3.Select the Recording tab and reduce the current write speed in half (for example, from 16x to 8x).
4.Click OK and close the My Computer window.
Try burning a CD. If the unit can not create the CD, go to the next step.
Step 4: Setting disc recording in Windows XP
If the computer has Windows XP, go to Step 6.
If you are using Windows XP, use the following steps to ensure that native burning is enabled:
1.Place a blank disc into the drive.
NOTE: If the error is not accessible. Incorrect function. â € opens, close it and continue through these steps to correct this problem.
2.Click Start, and then click My Computer.
Writing 3.Right click drive icon and select Properties.
4.In the Recording tab appears, select the Recording tab, select Enable CD recording on this drive, and then click OK. Try burning a disc again. Continue with the next step if you can not make a record.
If a registration form does not appear, continue with these steps.
Figure 2: Enable CD recording on this drive
5.Look a Recording tab:

5.Click the volume key that corresponds to the CD or DVD that is capable of writing discs. If installing a single unit, is a key to the volume. If you have more than one unit, examine the data values (by double clicking the right pane) to find the correct drive.
6.With the volume key selected in the left pane, click Double-click the Drive Type value in the right pane.
Figure 3: Unit Record Type value (CDRW)
7.Type number 1 in the Value data field if the unit is capable of recording to CDRW discs (including CD-R). Type a 2 if the drive can not write CDRW discs but can burn CD-R.
NOTE: A value of 3 indicates that the unit is only able to read discs. Change this value to 1 or 2 enables Windows to see the drive as a recordable disc.
8.Click OK and close the Registry Editor.
9.Repeat steps in this section, starting with step â € œbâ €.
NOTE: For more information about enabling the card recording unit, please see the support article Microsoft's 316,529 CD or CD-RW is not recognized as a recordable device (in English).

1.Open Device Manager and select the name of the CD.
2.Click the Uninstall or Remove button (in Windows XP, this is the square button with a red X).
3.Click Yes or OK to delete the list of CD. Do not restart the computer.
4.Close Device Manager.
5.If your computer has Windows XP or 2000, go to the next step without restarting the computer.
If your computer runs Windows 98 or Me, restart the computer, wait until all â œNew € € Hardwareâ messages have been resolved, and then try burning a disc. If the problem persists, go to Step 6.

Editor 8.Close registry, restart the computer, and wait until Windows configures the necessary drivers for new hardware.
9.After Windows is done configuring the new hardware, uninstall all CD writing software (RecordNow, EZ CD Creator) using Add or Remove Programs.
CAUTION: Make sure you understand installing burning software before uninstalling. The burning of HP software disc can be reinstalled through the application recovery process.
10. After all CD writing software has been removed, restart the computer and reinstall the CD writing software using the HP or Compaq Recovery software application or using the Compaq € ™ s fast food.
11.Try a record. If you still can not create a disc, go to the next step.
Step 6: Using Microsoft System Restore
If the computer still can not write to the disk, use System Restore to go back to a time when the drive was recognized by Windows. This step is only for Windows Me and XP. If you do not know how to restore Windows, use support document Using Microsoft € â € ™ s System Restore feature. Â €
When done, try to record a disc again to see if it works. If it works, you are done. If not, the next step.
Step 7: Using HP System Recovery
If the computer still can not write to the disc, recover the computer. If you do not know how to recover your computer, use one of the following documents:
* Hall: Running a System Recovery in Windows 98 and Me
* HP and Compaq: Performing a System Recovery in Windows XP
* If your Presario came with the quick restore discs, insert the first disc in the top drive CDRW / DVD, restart the computer, and follow the onscreen instructions.
When done, try burning a disc again to see if it works. If it works, you are done. If not, the next step.
Step 8: Determine if the drive hardware is bad
If the computer still can not write to the disc, open PC Doctor to gather more information and answer accordingly (not on Presario units manufactured before 2000).
1.Click Start, Run and type the following into the Open field: pcdrw32
2.Click Click OK and wait for the PC Doctor window to appear.
3.Open the appropriate CD / DVD-ROM test test list (as in the left column of the first menu).
4.If an error code is reported, the team may need to be repaired. Run the test again to confirm the error code. Use the following document Support for more information: Using PC Doctor
5.If, after trying these steps, the unit still can not write to disk discs, the drive is probably bad and should be replaced.
